Kagamimochi are two round and flat rice cakes, a smaller one stacked on top of the larger one. Since rice farming was essential to the Japanese, it has been considered sacred food since ancient times. Kagamimochi is placed in an alcove and offered on the family altar. The rice cakes are broken by hand or with a hammer and cooked, and then cooked with red beans and sugar. This event is called Kagamibiraki, and is held on January 11 in most areas of Japan. Another New Year’s tradition is ozoni, which is made with chicken, seafood and other ingredients. There are different types depending on the region. In some regions, Ozoni is made of square rice cakes and seasoned with soy sauce and salt. It is common, but in other parts of the country, round rice cakes cooked in soybean miso soup is the most common. The variety of ingredients used in ozoni is unique to each region, which is why there are so many different types of ingredients used.
It is also customary in Korea to eat something like ozoni on New Year’s Day. Hatsuyume refers to a dream you have on the first night of the year. This is a way for some Japanese to judge their luck for the following year.
The three main lucky dreams are said to be Mt. Fuji, the hawk and the eggplant. To have a good dream, some people put a picture of a ship of the seven gods of good fortune carrying treasures, or the animal Baku, which is believed to eat bad dreams, under their pillows.
